Settling Ties in the Poker Hands
Suits are not used to resolve ties.
A “kicker” refers to the cards in a hand that do not contribute to the hand. These are shown greyed out in the diagram – for example in the diagram, the Four of a Kind hand has a 3-Diamond as kicker.
- If more than one player has a Straight Flush or a Straight, the hand with the highest high card wins.
- If more than one player has Four of a Kind, than the hand with the highest Four wins; if there is still a tie, the hand with the highest kicker wins.
- If more than one player has a Full House, the hand with the highest Three wins; if there is still a tie, the hand with the highest Pair wins.
- If more than one player has a Flush, the highest high card wins, then the next highest card and so on.
- If more than one player has Three of a Kind, then the highest Three wins; if there is still a tie, the hand with the highest kicker wins, then the next highest kicker.
- If more than one player has Two Pairs, then the highest Pair wins; if there is still a tie, the highest second pair wins, and if there is still a tie, the highest kicker wins.
- If more than one player has a Pair, then the highest Pair wins; if there is still a tie, the highest kicker wins, then the next highest kicker and so on.
- If more than one player has a High Card, then the highest card wins, then the highest kicker and so on.
IF A TIE REMAINS, THEN THE PRIZE IS SHARED.
Note that, as we will need to use more than a single pack of cards, some hands may occur that would not normally be possible e.g. 5 Queens, but the judging will still use the usual ranking according to the diagram, so “5 Queens” will be ranked as “Four of a Kind”.
